Just over a year after a hit-and-run in Lower Merion Township killed a woman who was crossing City Avenue in a wheelchair, a Philadelphia man has pleaded guilty to a felony in connection with the incident.
In Montgomery County Court on Nov. 18, 38-year-old Jamal William McCullough pleaded guilty to a charge of “accidents involving death” after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors in which he’ll serve 3 to 6 years in state prison, according to a news report.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2024, in front of a Taco Bell in Bala Cynwyd, when 61-year-old Tracey Cary was using her wheelchair to cross West City Avenue. While investigators have said that McCullough stopped his vehicle and saw Cary lying in the roadway at the crash site, he then left the scene without helping Cary or calling emergency services.
Because Cary was not crossing the street in a crosswalk when the crash occurred, authorities have said McCullough might not have faced charges if he had stayed at the scene.
A Montgomery County judge will impose McCullough’s sentence at a Jan. 23, 2026, hearing; he remains free on bail pending that hearing.
