Sometimes it is hard to find the right fit when it comes to schools. In Delaware County, some have had the option for students that have “had significant difficulties in previous school placements.” With entry by referral only, students here come from a variety of backgrounds with one thing in common: a struggle to find the right fit.
The Delaware County Alternative High School serves 17 school districts in Delaware County. Currently, 45 students are enrolled in the school. And, while they have a ten-to-one student-to-counselor ratio, it isn’t a facility without its problems.
Offering full-day special education programs as a fully accredited high school academic program, TCA, or “the County Alternative” is located at 710 S. Old Middletown Road, in Media. (Media is the school’s mailing address, though the building is located in Middletown Township.) Leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Pennsylvania State Police were forced to visit on at least two reported occasions.
According to police reports, the PSP responded on Nov. 20 at 9:20 a.m. for the call of a pulled fire alarm. Police said they reported to the Delaware County Alternative School for a 15-year-old female student from Philadelphia. According to police, she “spit in a staff member’s face” and also pulled the school’s fire alarm. Police said the juvenile girl was arrested.
The following day, on Nov. 21, the PSP were again at the TCA for an incident. According to reports, troopers responded around 7:43 a.m. for the report of a fight between two students. Both students were male, 16-year-olds from Philadelphia. One of the boys had struck another in the face multiple times.
As the students are under the legal adult age, no updates were provided on arrests, court proceedings, nor current status of the cases.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
