The entire nation takes one day each year not just to remember a great civil liberties icon, but also to serve in his honor. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which fell this year on Monday, Jan. 19, is one designed to both recognize the contributions of the reverend and doctor, but also to provide a service to one’s community, too.
Students in one Rose Tree Media School District elementary school decided to do their service to honor the men and women that protect and serve their community. Rose Tree Elementary School students took time to honor King by making gift bags for the Upper Providence Township Police Department.
“Thank you to all the Rose Tree Elementary School students for taking the time to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day through these thoughtful, positive gifts — bags filled with goodies and uplifting messages — in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service,” said a social media post from the UPTPD. The department’s Officer Stephen Paul gladly accepted the gift bags on behalf of his fellow department staff.
The department members, however, didn’t keep the gift of giving all to themselves.
“These goodies were also shared with our UPT crossing guards and our awesome highway department,” said the police department’s post.
