With the heavy snow and ice of the past weekend, many have gotten creative with its removal. It can be tough in city and suburban landscapes to find a place to even put it all. Plows have been working overtime since Saturday to prepare roadways, remove the drifts, and keep travel as safe as possible.

Perhaps it was the extra hours that pushed one Pennsylvania Department of Transportation plow over its tipping point. In fact, the snowplow truck caught fire while traveling on a Delaware County section of Interstate 476. According to first responders from Broomall Fire Company, who responded to the blaze, the truck was “well involved” when they arrived.

Squad and Engine 53 handled the snowplow truck fire on I-476 during the evening of Monday, Jan. 26.

“Crews arrived to find a well-involved fire in the engine compartment, and the fire was quickly placed under control,” said the department’s post on social media. “No injuries were reported and the incident was turned over to Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT.”

The Marple Township incident was placed under control by responding fire fighters without incident. The fire will be investigated for cause by the state.
