Carl’s Cards and Collectibles has been a Havertown icon for 31 years, donning West Eagle Road to bring the area’s top sports memorabilia and cards to fans near and far. Sadly, the Main Line lost the man behind the business, and many are still reeling from the loss.

Carl Henderson, the shop’s owner, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1. According to a post from his family on social media, the sports collector lost his life, leaving friends and family with quite a hole.

“Our hearts are literally broken,” said the post, which was signed by Carl’s family, Susan, Lauren, Anthony, and John. “We have no words. We are devastated to announce the passing of our favorite person.”

The family mentioned that Carl’s love for sports was something that caught on to others who met him, spreading the love for all things Philadelphia to many.

“Carl was the best person we knew and then some, with a love for Philly sports that was infectious, and a love for his store that was unmatched,” said the post. “This doesn’t feel real, and we are taking each minute as it comes.”

Fans of the business chimed in, also commenting on the loss.

“Carl was the best,” said Instagram User AlwaysChasingUtley. “Loved running into him at games, Phillies Phestivlas …he was a true fan and collector who loved sharing the hobby with others. Truly has contributed so much to so many in the Delaware Valley. Our hearts are with your family and all who loved him.”

Spector_Art on Instagram agreed.

“Absolute legend,” he said. “Best in the biz. Can’t believe this. Rest in peace, my condolences and prayers.”

Another fan said he loved shopping at the Haverton business.

“So sad,” said Jay B. Brower. “Best collectible store ever and so many great experiences there with my son. My condolences.”

Carl’s Cards and Collectibles currently continues its online shop here. The store, located at 22 W. Eagle Road in Havertown, is available by calling 510-789-4996. Hours may vary during this time, as the family prepares for Carl’s arrangements.
