If you receive a call from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department deputy claiming there is a warrant out for your arrest, hang up the phone, law enforcement officials say.
In a Jan. 21 post on Facebook, the sheriff’s department stated that “scammers are calling residents with false information about warrants” and posing as deputies to try to obtain confidential information. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department said it will never request money or personal information over the phone.
“If you receive a phone call like this, do not trust the caller ID,” the post implored. Scammers often use Voice over IP technology to trick victims into answering incoming calls by appearing as a trusted local number, business or government agency, according to the Federal Communications Commission.
Residents who receive such a call are advised to hang up and contact the county sheriff’s department at 610-891-4296.
